Community First Credit Union to Open Jefferson Branch | Local News

JEFFERSON – A local credit union that has been in existence for over 65 years is planning to open a branch in Jefferson.

Community First Credit Union will soon be opening a location at 22 West Jefferson Street, said Mark DeGeorge, CEO of Community First.

Four new employees were hired to staff the site and received training at the Ashtabula site, DeGeorge said. Three of those employees are residents of Jefferson, he said.

“We have a lot of members who are in the southern part of the county, and it was just about time we made that decision,” DeGeorge said. “With this building available, we thought we could serve many more people in Ashtabula County as well. “

The building is currently undergoing renovations, he said.

The opening date of the new branch depends on whether or not the building materials are delivered on time, DeGeorge said.

The decision to open a new branch was made in 2020, DeGeorge said.

“Things turned out the right way, and we were able to make some pretty quick decisions on what we wanted to do and move forward,” he said.

Community First was founded in 1955, DeGeorge said.

He said everyone at the credit union is excited about the new branch.

Credit unions are owned by their customers and the profits are reinvested in the credit union, DeGeorge said. They have practically all the services of a bank, he said.

DeGeorge said the village was great to work with. “We had no problem,” he said. “We got it right on time and we’re just moving forward. “

Jefferson Village Administrator Pasquale Martuccio said the village is happy to have Community First.

“Any business that is considering relocating here to the village of Jefferson is really welcome,” he said.

The building was initially a First Merit branch, then went through several different owners, Martuccio said.

“We know he has a credit union that has been established for a while, and we welcome them into the community,” Martuccio said.
